How to Break in Work Boots : 7 Solutions for Your New Pair
It’s a glorious day. The sun is shining, the game is on and you just bought a brand new pair of work boots. You simply can’t wait until Monday rolls around to try on the new gear however, there is one downside to this whole scenario.
While you can choose the size of your boot, you can’t really choose the comfort.
Maybe you get lucky with a naturally comfortable boot but for the most part, you’ll need to break them in properly. If not, these new boots will cause some serious discomfort and that’s not something you can really afford while working.
How to Break in Work Boots
Thankfully, there are a variety of ways you can go about this process to ensure your boots are broken in correctly and efficiently.
Use a Shoehorn
This is probably the easiest and quickest way to break in a work boot. Simply buy a shoehorn and stick it in your boot. You can adjust the wooden shoehorn to expand and properly stretch the leather material of your boot. Furthermore, it takes no effort. Just stick it in and leave it for a few hours while you watch the game and the leather stretches away.
Yes, this one might seem kind of obvious but a great way to break in work boots is to wear them. However, don’t do this at work. While in the comfort of your own home, wear the shoes for short periods of time. This way, the leather will learn to adapt and form around your feet.
If you don’t have time to lounge around all day with shoehorns or walking, there are some shortcuts. Take alcohol for example. Not only is alcohol a shortcut in social situations, but it helps break in work boots quickly. So get your favorite bottle of aged Scotch and start rubbing your boots. Just kidding, any normal rubbing alcohol will do. Find the pressure points on your boots and rub to your heart's content. How do you find these pressure points? Well, they say no risk no reward so you need to wait until your feet hurt in the boots first. Then, you can identify the problem areas and attack them with alcohol, just like your Uncle Ken does with his life. The alcohol will help the leather in these regions expand and then help shape to your feet.
If you don’t have any alcohol around the house, perhaps you can find some mink oil. For those that don’t know, mink oil is a special oil used in cosmetic and medical products. To obtain it, you must render mink fat removed from milk pelts. If you’re short on mink pelts, don’t worry because it's fairly easy to obtain mink oil. Anyway, milk oil is extremely efficient at softening leather. So, just rub this all over your boot and soon, the leather will conform to your feet.
Again, this is another quick fix for those lacking time. If you need to get to the work site soon but didn’t break in your new boots, moleskin is a quick fix. The moleskin acts as a barrier between the shoe and the foot. Just put a thin layer of it around the problem areas like heels and toes. Eventually, you’ll break in your shoes but Moleskin will help you along the way until that happens.
While certainly not a conventional method, using old water to break in your boot is something to try. To do this, put cold water in a sealable bag and press out any remaining air. Now, place that water back in your boot, making sure to angle the water in any tight spots. Now, take your brand new boots and stick them in the freezer between the Ribeye steaks and Oreo ice cream. If your freezer works properly, the water will then turn to ice and expand the body of your boots. When it’s time to remove the bag, make sure you let the ice melt. Also, before even attempting this, waterproof your boots.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to break in new work boots. However, if you want to save some effort in this activity, buying a boot in the right size is always a good place to start. Make sure to try on various boots to ensure the perfect fit and comfort. From there, it will be easier to get those boots to an ideal formation so you can work pain-free.
These are the solutions on how to break in work boots. Hope you apply the technique you prefer most and one more suggestion for you that if any single method can't solve your problem, use 2-3 methods one after another.
